On Thursday, the New York Times dared to ask a question that has been plaguing moms for years: what do you do when your children's artistic output outgrows the surface area of the refrigerator? "We're not going to build an addition on the back for every piece of crayon art they've ever done," one parent sighed. But reporter Michael Tortorello and the frustrated parents he interviewed forget that for a lucky few, those crayon artworks could end up paying for that new addition.

In the last decade, paintings by child art prodigies have commanded upwards of $25,000 at auction -- and loads of media attention. Art historians will remember that these precocious painters aren't an exclusively 21st century phenomenon: Pablo Picasso showed unusual promise at the age of 8 with his bullfighter painting "Picador," while Dürer crafted a strikingly precise silverpoint self-portrait at 13. The great early Renaissance painter Giotto, Vasari recounts, was discovered at a similarly tender age after the Florentine painter Cimabue caught him drawing pictures of sheep on a rock.

In an effort to scout out today's great-artists-to-be, ARTINFO surveyed young talents who have recently attracted attention -- and even collectors -- as a result of their art. Here, below, are four up-and-comers, most of whom favor brash brushstrokes and a rich palette reminiscent of the Abstract Expressionists, and who give new meaning to the term "fresh-faced." MINI-MONET: KIERON WILLIAMSON

Perhaps the most established pint-sized artist, the Norfolk-England native sold out his 2009 sophomore exhibition in 14 minutes. A family friend discovered the seven-year-old's talent three years ago. Now, his paintings cost upwards of $1,225 apiece and have acquired waiting lists of almost 700 people. Williamson's specialty is delicate watercolor and pastel landscapes, which might explain his admiration for Monet. But like any burgeoning artist, he's wary of comparisons. "I know who Picasso is," he told a Guardian reporter in a lengthy profile last year. "I don't want to become Picasso."

MINI-POLLOCK: AUTUMN DE FOREST

In April, oil painter Autumn de Forest became the youngest artist ever admitted to the Boulder City Fine Arts festival. She was eight. Autumn, who favors bright, all-over compositions, has been compared to Wassily Kandinsky and early Jackson Pollock. Like the drip painter, de Forest works with her canvas laid horizontally on the floor -- though her motivation is more logistical than theoretical. "Because painting vertically would pose difficulty in reaching areas of the canvas, de Forest lays the painting on the ground and moves around it," the "About Me" section of her Web site explains. Today nine years old, de Forest may need to put some of the $250,000 she's reportedly earned in auction sales toward a site update. Currently, her work available online comes from only two periods: "Age Six" and "Age Seven."

MINI-VAN MEEGEREN: MARLA OLMSTEAD

Some might recognize Olmstead from the 2007 documentary "My Kid Could Paint That," which chronicled the controversy surrounding the artist, who's now 11. Olmstead first garnered attention (and a New York Times profile) for her abstract expressionist style canvases at age four. Within a year, her work was selling for tens of thousands of dollars. But like the great Dutch forger Han van Meegeren, who tried to pass his paintings off as Vermeers, someone else might be the true creator of Marla's canvases. Documentary director Amir Bar-Lev never succeeded in capturing the tot painting one of her works from start to finish -- though he did catch her frequently asking her father for help.

MINI-PICASSO: ALEXANDRA NECHITA

Now grown beyond her precocious glory days, at 26, Alexandra Nechita had already acquired a startlingly impressive résumé before she was allowed into R-rated movies. By age 12, the Romanian-born cubist painter and muralist had been commissioned to produce work for the 39th annual Grammy Awards, Polaroid's 50th anniversary, and the Andre Agassi Foundation. The recent graduate of UCLA's Fine Arts Program also racked up a formidable number of television appearances before entering high school, including the Oprah Winfrey show and a guest spot (as herself) on "Boy Meets World." In the episode, titled "Better than Your Average Cory," Nechita causes Cory to develop an inferiority complex and blame his lack of skills on his average-guy father.

The 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death is to be marked with a charity concert and at Liverpool’s Echo Arena candlelit vigil at the European Peace Monument in Liverpool.
The concert, entitled Lennon Remembered – The 9 Faces of John, will take place on December 9 and features artists that worked with Lennon at nine different stages of the star’s life. The gig will raise money for local charities Alder Hey Imagine Appeal, Radio City’s Cash For Kids and the Mathew Street Festival.
The vigil will take place at 8pm on December 8 at Chavasse Park, Liverpool ONE. The focus will be the monument Peace & Harmony created by artist Lauren Voiers.
Fans from all over the world are expected at the events to celebrate the life of the musical genius John Lennon.

Beatles fans from all over the UK will be make their way to Liverpool on 8th December to mark the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death with a candlelit vigil set to take place at the city's European Peace Monument, dedicated to John. They will be led in song on the occasion by local singers and musicians.
The vigil will take place at the European Peace Monument in Liverpool.
Since its unveiling by Julian and Cynthia Lennon on Lennon's birth date (October 9th), the monument, entitled "Peace & Harmony," has become a popular focal point for visitors to the Beatles home city looking to celebrate Lennon's life and message of peace through his music.
The monument represents Liverpool's ever physical focal point for fans of Lennon and The Beatles to congregate and remember the artistic and creative legacy of the world icon.

The vigil of remembrance will form a counterpoint to the "Lennon Remembered - The 9 Faces of John" concert taking place at Liverpool's Echo Arena the following day (Thursday 9th December). All profits from the concert are being donated to regional charities Alder Hey Imagine Appeal, Radio City's Cash For Kids and the Mathew Street Festival. The evening event will close the enormously successful John Lennon Season that is taking place right across the city.
Created by American artist Lauren Voiers, the striking "Peace & Harmony" monument features a white feather at its apex; a detail created to the express wishes of Lennon's son Julian. As Julian comments, "One of the things my father said to me was that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting me know he was going to be OK, it was by, in some shape or form, presenting me with a white feather."
Jerry Goldman, Managing Director of The Beatles Story, said, "Although the European Peace Monument has only been on public display for just over a month it's already taken on a global significance of its own. People from all over the world are coming to the city to pay their respects and consider Lennon's message of peace through his music.

A local artist is taking the art world by storm, and in 12 years she’ll be old enough to toast her success

Painter Autumn de Forest bounds out of her large home in northwest Las Vegas and calls a cheerful hello. Wispy-thin and dressed in jeans and a matching pink ensemble, she projects a pleasantly sunny, carefree disposition.

Inside the de Forest home, most walls are covered with non-objective paintings in vibrant colors. The 3-by-4 foot canvases are done in the oft-imitated Abstract Expressionist style pioneered by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Of course, all the ones seen here are by Autumn.

Since her first auction in February when she earned more than $100,000 in 16 minutes, the artist has become a mini media sensation. She’s been featured on Inside Edition, NBC’s Today and a Discovery Health special titled My Kid’s Smarter Than Me. All that success and she’s only 9 years old.

“Her mother and I are incredibly flattered when people call her a prodigy,” says her father, Doug de Forest, “but that’s not a term we use.”

He’s an artist himself—a musician and composer, currently performing at V: The Ultimate Variety Show in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood—but he seems determined to stay in the background. He leads the way to a garage-size space attached to the main house by a narrow breezeway: Autumn’s studio.

Resembling many painters’ studios, Autumn’s is adorned with paintings in various stages of completion: portraits, landscapes and some that are purely fanciful. There’s a heart encircled with bands of paint and a floating whale that invokes Magritte. From an art connoisseurship perspective, these fantasy landscapes and decorative tableaux are mostly unremarkable, save for the fact they were executed by a very young child.

While she settles herself in a low-slung chair (“My dog always sits here, so you don’t want to,” she explains with a laugh), Doug busies himself in the studio, doing the cleaning, organizing and prep work he says is his only contribution to his daughter’s oeuvre. “I’m happy to subjugate myself to doing the menial labor,” he says.

While Doug must be listening to our conversation, he refrains from interjecting, even when Autumn struggles with one or two questions related to her career timeline. Surely he could have helped, but it’s as if his silence is saying, “No stage parenting going on here, in case you were wondering. And I know you were.”

Autumn indicates she likes school (especially science), has a lot of friends, loves babies and animals and has no siblings, but considers her poodle, Ginger, her “sister.” She also has no trouble expounding upon the mechanics of and inspiration behind her paintings. Autumn is composed, polite, has a charmingly precise way of enunciating and, when she remembers something she wants to recount, is prone to putting her hands to her temples and saying, “Flashback!”

Autumn also reveals a respectable knowledge about Andy Warhol, to whom she pays homage in one of the home’s most eye-catching paintings, “Gold Barbie Marilyn.” She created it using the tricky encaustic, wax-painting medium and liquid gold leaf. (“Jasper Johns!” she exclaims, when asked where she learned about encaustic.) Whereas Warhol used reference photographs to paint “Gold Marilyn,” Autumn used her Marilyn Monroe Barbie doll, which her mother—former actor and model Katherine Olsen de Forest—smilingly drops off. Katherine doesn’t linger and, like her husband, doesn’t intrude.

The painting itself is pretty good by any number of measures. Featuring a near exact likeness of the Marilyn Barbie, harmonious composition and enough difference from its inspiration, it stands alone as more than just a copycat piece. Autumn has bona fide skill.

When asked why she chose to paint this subject, she says it was because Marilyn was a “sexy brand” in Warhol’s time. And when Autumn considered sexy brands today, Barbie seemed the obvious choice. Of everything she will say during the interview, this comment alone smacks of adult-coached talking points. On the other hand, a precocious child maneuvering in an adult world would naturally pick up some adult jargon along the way.

Autumn quickly adds, “I love Barbie,” as she turns the Marilyn doll around in her hands. “This one is Marilyn from the movie The Seven Year Itch, I think—the one where her dress went whoosh!”

“Whoosh!” probably didn’t figure into any talking points. As if to further nullify the idea that her career is crafted by grown-ups—a belief that has been expressed by more than one hard-working adult artist—Autumn has a series of fetus paintings.

She first saw a fetus at the human-corpse-on-display show Body Worlds 1 in Denver about four years ago. “We considered for a long time whether we should take her, but she was so interested in it and responded so positively,” Katherine says.

One tableau, titled “New Dripping Life,” features a sunrise with dozens of painted and sculpted fetuses. Autumn says some of these plastic, injection-molded figurines—which resemble medical models—were purchased by her dad “from the computer,” but she molded the tiniest ones out of Sculpey clay. None of the fetus series has sold; her parents don’t expect any will and are “fine” with that. They raised their eyebrows when the fetus paintings first appeared, but wouldn’t think of editing Autumn’s creative process.

In fact, the de Forests seem humbled by their daughter’s abilities. They recall first being struck by Autumn’s prowess when, at age 5, she created a “Rothko-esque” piece out of wood and stain from the garage. Trips to Michaels—and eventually Dick Blick—ensued, and she soon produced her first three, small-scale canvas paintings, which now hang in the dining room.

In spring 2009, after a few months of collecting canvases, the de Forests exhibited Autumn’s work at the Boulder City Art Festival. Doug encouraged Autumn to introduce herself to passersby and invite them to see her paintings. She took to the task with natural zeal and even won an honorable-mention ribbon.

Subsequently, Doug researched representation for Autumn’s work and came across Ben Valenty begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting, who has enjoyed success representing child artists beginning with Alexandra Nechita in the mid-’90s. In June 2009, Doug contacted Valenty, who happened to be conducting an art auction at Lake Las Vegas in October. He invited the de Forests to stop by and say hello. Doug knew “sometimes you only have one chance,” so he loaded a rented van with Autumn’s latest output and, to hear him describe it, more or less ambushed the dealer. Prior to the auction, Doug and Katherine recall Autumn being apathetic about selling her work, but her eyes lit up when she saw the elegant, exciting atmosphere.

Valenty, too, liked what he saw. He requested 12 paintings, which Autumn eagerly agreed to supply. That meant using her winter holiday to meet Valenty’s January deadline. Autumn sold more than $100,000 worth of paintings at her first auction and has continued to sell in the tens of thousands at each auction ever since. (The money goes into a trust.) Her auction presentations, which are viewable on YouTube, show audiences receiving her witty, effusive art explanations with delight.

Back at home, Doug says, “We maintain an atmosphere of creative discipline.” The family cites Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers: The Story of Success (Little, Brown and Co., 2008) as a major influence, and minimizes TV and video games. They foster a philosophy of “creative equality,” implying that Autumn and her parents enjoy a fruitful exchange on a level playing field.

Meanwhile, he and his wife were raised in families where their creative pursuits were thrust upon them and their passions squelched. That is the opposite of what they hope they’re doing for their only child. About “doubting Thomases”—including close friends—who have questioned the authenticity of Autumn’s artwork or her parents’ choices, Katherine becomes aggrieved.

“To think that I would ever do something that would potentially harm my child or is meant to be self-serving to me is absolutely ridiculous,” she says. “I would do anything for her, and all I want is for her to be happy.”

What’s most surprising about meeting Autumn’s parents is that they don’t seem motivated by their daughter’s monetary success, nor do they trade on the concept of “prodigy.” Doug prefers to describe his daughter as “empowered.” He and Katherine convey a heartfelt belief that Autumn’s success lies within reach of any child whose parents are as resourceful and passionate as they are. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if we gave more children the tools to maximize their creative potential?” Doug muses.

When asked if they’re concerned about what might become of Autumn’s career when the novelty of youth fades, Doug is forthright. “Look at all the most important artists in the last half century and they all had a gimmick,” he says. “We just want her to have a foundation that she’ll be able to build upon as long as she wants to. That’s what her success now is going to allow her to do.”

Seeing as he also believes in the tenet that “there’s no better art, only better promotion,” it’s reasonable to assume the de Forest “team,” as Doug describes it, will succeed. For Autumn’s part, she says no matter what happens, “I’ll never stop being an artist. That’s what I do.”

Modern icon: Autumn's Barbie Marilyn pays tribute to pop art master Andy Warhol

She hasn't even started secondary school, let alone art school, but this pocket-sized genius has already been acclaimed by art critics and collectors alike.
Meet Autumn de Forest who at just eight years old is the world's youngest conceptual artist.
She has been compared to past masters such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso and is talked about as one of the world's only authentic artistic child geniuses.
Offering up her work for auction since February of this year, Autumn has already raked in $200,000 and she has only been painting since she was five.
The young and assured artist's skill as a painter was only discovered by accident and during the past three years her range of styles has astonished as she moved effortless through expressionism to surrealism to modernism.
Churning out an incredible 60 works of art since the age of five, the young prodigy has just finished her latest masterpiece - a self portrait - which she believes is her best work to date.
'Autumn Colours is my best work so far,' said the child prodigy.
'I love it. Every time I come to see it I see something fresh and new in it. It is a renewable artwork to me.'
'Another work that I have painted is Tree of Hearts. That really speaks to me and makes me feel that I can fully express the metaphorical and layer my work properly.
"My inspiration is everywhere. In road signs, grocery signs, in my mother's magazines and on the television.'
'I am especially in love with old movies like Singing in The Rain or something a bit more modern like Titanic.'

'I was out in our garage applying some wood varnish to some furniture when Autumn came out to see me,' said Doug de Forest, 36, Autumn's father.
'She asked if she could take some of the leftover plywood that was lying around and a brush and if she could dip it in the varnish to mess around.'
'So I left her to it, but when I turned around I could see what I could only describe as a modern art masterpiece in my eyes.'
Although her parents originally believed that Autumn would move into musical composition like her father, Doug and his actress wife Katherine decided to nurture what they saw as Autumn's incredible gift.
'I was made to play the violin every day since the age of four, so I knew that the most important thing was not to take the fun away from Autumn and her painting,' said Doug.
'So we purchased acrylic paints and some canvasses for Autumn to experiment on that were quite small at around one and half feet tall and just under two feet long.'
'As the year progressed Autumn must have produced around twenty pieces, each one that developed in tone and style.'
'By the end of the year, my wife and I had no choice but to provide Autumn with larger five feet by six feet canvases.'

As well as moving onto larger canvases, Autumn also began painting in oil too, which allowed her to experiment with new brush strokes and techniques.
'By the time she was approaching her seventh birthday I thought it was time that maybe Autumn should display her work at local art fairs,' said Doug.
'She reminded us of the abstract art of Georgia O'Keefe and Willem de Kooning and in other ways of the pop art of Andy Warhol.'
'The attendees there were taken aback by the fact that the work was by an eight year old.'
'They assumed that she was just our daughter and that me or my wife had produced the work.'
'Eventually this took us to the Malibu Fine Arts Festival in LA and it was during this festival that I realised that I needed to get more help with Autumn.'

Bringing in noted Orange County art dealer Ben Valenty begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting, Ben set Autumn on the way to auction.
'Ben had the expertise to guide Autumn's career in a way that my wife and I couldn't,' said Doug.
'I want my daughter to be a young girl, but at the same time as long as she is happy I want her to fully explore her talents as naturally as possible and Ben seemed the right guy to do that.'
Spending up to four hours a day in her own studio in the de Forest family home in Las Vegas, Autumn still attends school just like any other eight year old.
'My favourite classes are history and science and of course my real passion is my painting,' said Autumn.

Mood music: Her parents thought at one point that she might follow her father into music, but Autumn's painting has gone from strength to strength. This piece sold for £15,800 at auction earlier this year.

'When people ask what I want to do when I grow up I tell them that I am already doing exactly that.'
'Although I do love animals and wouldn't mind being a vet.' Currently settling back into school after her summer holiday, Autumn and her parents are happy to see where her talent takes her.
'All this money means that her future is secure,' said Doug.
'That is one major plus point. Another is that my girl gets to express herself in a way that many children cant and I am so happy to be able to enable her to do that.'
